BEHIND THE BUC: REESE SHAW

Reese Shaw is a 2005-born forward for the Buccaneers. He has grown exponentially as a player and teammate this season and is not yet committed to playing college hockey.

Shaw is from Coon Rapids, Minn. (pop. 63,377), a northern suburb of the Twin Cities. He is the youngest of five, but none of his older siblings played hockey. His dad, Kris, was thrilled to share his passion with one of his sons when Shaw showed interest. He grew up playing for Coon Rapids YHA and went on to play high school hockey for Gentry Academy.

During Shaw's sophomore year at Gentry, the Stars went undefeated, claiming the Minnesota State High School League Class A Championship. In his sophomore and junior years, he notched over a point per game before reaching a career-high in his senior year, tallying 47 points (22 goals, 25 assists) in 27 games played. Shaw spent his senior year as an affiliate for the New Mexico Ice Wolves in the North American Hockey League, gaining six games of junior hockey experience before moving on to the USHL.

At the end of his senior season, Shaw was selected by the Lincoln Stars in the 2023 USHL Phase II Draft in the 8th round, 119th overall. He spent the 2023-2024 season in Lincoln and was traded to Des Moines at the beginning of the 2024-2025 season.

"Reese has been a solid two-way center for us all year," Head Coach and General Manager Matt Curley said. "He came in with a full year of junior experience, which has enabled him to continue his growth as a more impactful player. I always enjoy spending time with Shawsy, as he is a thoughtful and insightful young man and offers some funny tidbits for me in our conversations."

Since coming to Des Moines, Shaw has found his stride as a player in the USHL. His quick wit and outgoing personality have made him a presence in the locker room, and he continues to grow his ability on the ice. He has solidified his role on the team, and the Bucs look forward to seeing him grow as he continues his USHL career and beyond.
