Mikey Burchill is a 2005-born forward for the Buccaneers. He joined the team late in the 2024–2025 season and is committed to Northern Michigan University to play NCAA DI men's hockey.
Burchill is from Mundelein, Ill. (pop. 31,790), a northern suburb of Chicago. He started playing hockey at three years old and knew from a young age that it was what he wanted to do the rest of his life. Burchill grew up playing for the Team Illinois AAA club through his 14U season.
In Burchill's 15U year, he moved to Plymouth, Mich., to play for the Compuware 15O AAA team and helped lead the team to a state championship and a third-place finish at USA Hockey Nationals. At the end of the 2020–2021 season, he was selected by the Dubuque Fighting Saints in the 2021 USHL Phase I Draft in the first round, fifth overall.
Burchill brought a high level of experience to the Bucs, having spent two seasons with the Fighting Saints before being traded to the Youngstown Phantoms prior to the 2023–2024 season. Des Moines acquired Burchill from the Phantoms in a deadline trade in February 2025. Before and during his early USHL career, Burchill also represented Team USA in several international tournaments.
"I have known Mikey for a long time," Head Coach and General Manager Matt Curley said. "From our time together on various U.S. National teams, I have also been a huge fan of Burchy's ability to play, especially his skating and compete level. Having the chance to get him at the deadline was a no-brainer on our end, as his experience and play has been a tremendous asset down the stretch. Although it is only for a short time, I'm really happy to have the chance to finally have him on a full-time basis as he finishes up his impressive junior career."
The opportunity to meet and play for Coach Curley before joining the Bucs eased the transition for Burchill. His personality fit right into the Des Moines locker room, and he has enjoyed getting close to the 2024–2025 team. His years in the USHL have pushed him to become more independent, living away from his family in various cities across the Midwest. The Bucs are happy to see Burchill end his impressive USHL career in Des Moines and look forward to seeing his future at Northern Michigan and beyond!
