For the third straight year, the Des Moines Buccaneers have surpassed 500 collective community service hours, a testament to our commitment to developing players both on and off the ice. One of the most important elements of player development is understanding servitude and the lasting impact it has on the community. From meal prep to school visits, mentoring young athletes, and even building beds, our players have dedicated themselves to making a difference in the Metro. These experiences shape them just as much as their time on the ice.
"The lessons that they take from their servitude for others is every bit as important as the lessons they take away from playing. We are extremely proud of their work towards these causes and their continued commitment to being a good Buc, both on and off the ice." – Matt Curley, Head Coach and General Manager of the Des Moines Buccaneers
Community engagement remains central to our mission. This year, the Buccaneers proudly partnered with numerous organizations, including Meals From the Heartland, the Johnston Food Pantry, and the Bethel Mission. Players socialized puppies at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa to aid in adoption, helped create an adaptive sports zone for athletes of all abilities through Can Play, and made several school visits to play floor hockey with students. Additionally, they visited a local school to deliver hats and mittens collected from our annual drive.
We are also proud to continue our partnership with the Des Moines Youth Hockey Association (DMYHA), dedicating approximately 120 hours to mentoring the next generation of hockey players. Our coaches, leading by example, contributed 76 hours of service as well.
"Giving back to the community is at the core of who we are as an organization. Hockey is more than just a game, it's a way to bring people together, inspire the next generation, and support those in need. We take pride in the role our players and staff play in making a difference, and we will continue to use our platform to grow the sport and give back to the Central Iowa community that supports us." – Eric Grundfast, President of the Des Moines Buccaneers
Charitable giving is also a cornerstone of our organization. Each season, we donate hundreds of ticket vouchers and signed memorabilia while raising critical funds for nonprofits through specialty jersey auctions and Chuck-a-Puck proceeds. To date, the Buccaneers are proud to have donated over $120,000 this season.
The Buccaneers aren't just a team. We are a cornerstone of community engagement and hockey development in Des Moines.
