Billet Family Spotlight: Joe & Jodi Simon – Buc-Tastic Billet Family
The Des Moines Buccaneers are proud to shine a spotlight on another amazing billet family: Joe and Jodi Simon. For the past several years, the Simons have generously opened their home to Buccaneers players, becoming a vital part of the team behind the scenes. Their journey into billeting is rooted in a deep love for hockey—and an even deeper appreciation for the community that surrounds the game.
Their son grew up playing hockey and eventually competed at the Junior level in Topeka and Dallas. Even a decade later, Joe and Jodi still speak fondly of the billet families who welcomed their son—Michiko in Kansas, and Ralph and Debbie in Texas. The kindness and care their son received inspired them to "pay it forward" by offering that same support to other young athletes.
"We're blessed to have the space, and being able to welcome these players into our home has been such a rewarding experience. It's not just about giving them a place to stay—it's about becoming part of their journey. They become part of our family."
This season, the Simons are hosting Brittan Alstead and Lucas Mann—both Minnesota natives and former childhood hockey rivals. From sharing laughs around the dinner table to handing out Halloween candy, and even navigating a few (amusing) run-ins with an empty gas tank, Brittan and Lucas have quickly become part of the Simon household.
Over the years, the Simons have welcomed a number of Bucs into their home, including Ethan Fredericks, Joey Muldowney, Payton Nelson, Liam Watkins, and their current billet players, Lucas Mann and Brittan Alstead. They remain in close touch with all of them and make it a point to follow their careers—often catching their games online. This past season, the Simons even traveled to support former Bucs in college action, including Joey Muldowney (UConn) and Liam Watkins (University of Nebraska Omaha).

The Des Moines Buccaneers are incredibly grateful for billet families like the Simons, who open their homes and hearts to our players. Joe and Jodi represent everything that makes our hockey family special—and we couldn't be more thankful to call them part of the Bucs family.
