Buccaneers Captain Owen Dyer Named Finalist for Inaugural Gaudreau Award

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa — Des Moines Buccaneers Team Captain Owen Dyer has been named one of the finalists for the inaugural Gaudreau Award, the United States Hockey League (USHL) announced this week.

The Gaudreau Award was introduced by the USHL in January to honor the enduring legacy of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, whose impact on the hockey world continues to resonate deeply. The Gaudreau brothers were celebrated not only for their excellence on the ice but also for their exceptional character and the love they showed to their families, teammates, and communities.

"They were not only exceptional players and teammates but, most importantly, extraordinary people," said USHL Commissioner Glenn Hefferan. "Their love for the game was only surpassed by their love for their families. As devoted husbands to Meredith and Madeline and loving fathers to their beautiful children, they led with the same integrity, passion, and humility they brought to the rink. This award was created to honor their legacy and to serve as a shining example of excellence, character, and heart both on and off the ice."

Each USHL General Manager nominated one player who embodies the values represented by the Gaudreau brothers, providing testimonials and answering a series of questions to support their selection. The first-ever Gaudreau Award winner will be announced on Saturday, April 12.
Owen Dyer has been a standout leader for the Buccaneers over the past two seasons, both on and off the ice. Known for his relentless work ethic and positive influence in the locker room, Dyer's journey has been one of grit and determination. After spending two seasons in the North American Hockey League (NAHL), he climbed the ranks to become a key figure on the Buccaneers' roster.

His leadership is evident not only in his play but also in the mentorship he provides to younger teammates, helping guide them through their own developmental journeys. Dyer has quickly become a fan favorite in the Des Moines community, recognized for his heart, humility, and passion for the game.

General Manager and Head Coach Matt Curley states, "There has been a few kids that I have had the honor of working with that transcends what it means to be a hockey player.  Owen is unquestionably one of those individuals who, among his many contributions to our team as a player on the ice, has elevated our team in countless ways off the ice.  His compassion for those around him is profound; his commitment to his teammates is unmatched.  My admiration for him as a young man cannot be overstated as he embodies everything you could ever want as a player and person.  He undoubtably has a tremendous future at Brown and will be terrific in his post-collegiate playing career.  More importantly, he will one day be a wonderful husband, father and leader in his community, continuing to carry the same values and ideals he holds himself to today as a son, brother and teammate".

The Des Moines Buccaneers are proud to celebrate Owen's recognition and wish him the best as the league prepares to present this meaningful award.
