BUC-TASTIC BILLET FAMILY: KELLY SCHOFIELD

The Des Moines Buccaneers are thrilled to shine a spotlight on just one of our exceptional billet families, Kelly Schofield, who has opened her home to our players for two seasons. Kelly's unwavering dedication to supporting the next generation of hockey stars has made a lasting impact, and we are honored to share her story.

Kelly first got involved in billeting after hearing an announcement at one of the Buccaneers' games. Encouraged by her kids, she decided to give it a try, knowing she had the space to offer. What started as a leap into the unknown quickly blossomed into a deep commitment to the players and the sport.

"I had no idea what to expect at first, but along the way, I gained a profound appreciation for the behind-the-scenes aspects of Junior Hockey," Kelly shared. "The sacrifices the boys and their families make to be part of this sport are immense. I strive to provide them with a home-like environment, just as their parents have trusted me to do."

Kelly's journey began last season, when she had the pleasure of billeting Paul Minnehan and Ben Kevan. This season, Ben returned, and she also welcomed Blake Zielinski into her home in December. As a billet family, Kelly has become more than just a host—she's created a warm and supportive environment for the players, making their time away from home easier and more enjoyable.

Some of Kelly's favorite memories include watching the players experience the cold and snow for the first time—particularly the California boys who had never seen it before. "We have 'Forced Family Fun' nights, enjoy family dinners, and of course, there are always piles of shoes around the house. We watch hockey, football, and sometimes even The Bachelor," she laughed.

While billeting requires significant time, patience, and even the occasional sacrifice of hot water, Kelly believes the rewards are immeasurable. "Billeting is truly an investment—of time, patience, hot water, and most importantly, your heart. But the return on that investment is priceless. It's laughter, it's community, it's an extended family."

Through her commitment to the team, Kelly has not only made an impact on the lives of the players but also on the greater Buccaneers community. Her story is a testament to the spirit of kindness, generosity, and support that makes junior hockey so much more than just a game.

We thank Kelly Schofield for her unwavering dedication to the Des Moines Buccaneers and the players who have had the privilege of calling her home.
